Word of the week: Shevvilder

Keeping the balance with a word from over the Pennines

Most of my ancestors are from Lancashire and Derbyshire, but I do have a few from Yorkshire. So I thought it was only fair that this week’s word came from over the Pennines.

This week’s word is courtesy of The Yorkshire Dictionary by Arnold Kellet.

A Shevvilder is someone who comes from Sheffield. I have a couple of ancestors from there, so they might have called themselves Shevvilders.

I guess most towns and cities have words or phrases that describe their inhabitants. I’d be interested to hear yours.
