Great British Traditions #1

Cow Close Up

Very slowly, we’re starting to come to terms with the ‘new normal’, but if feels like there’s a long way to go. Sadly, many of our great British traditions have been cancelled or postponed. In an attempt to make up for this in some small way, I’m planning to publish an occasional series of articles celebrating some of the things we’ll miss this year.

This week’s is for all you yachting lovers, who’ll miss out on the spectacle of the Isle of Wight’s annual regatta. Relocated to North Yorkshire (and two months earlier than usual), here is my rendition of Cow(e)s week!

Here’s the ‘flotilla’ of cows preparing to launch from the banks of the River Derwent at Kirkham Priory.
Meanwhile on the opposite bank of the river, a hushed crowd waits expectantly for the first race to begin. No problem with social distancing here!
Following a hard fought contest, the cows are resting. Hardy mariners all, it’s good to see that great British traditions are being upheld in the face of adversity.
